Wood Nymph

Dryads are tree nymphs, but specifically they are Oak tree nymphs.

This nymph happens to be a Pecan tree nymph.

Made primarily out of paper and cardboard. Some wire was used for the branches and for her hair. And a few leaves were thrown in as well.

She is not quite finished but mostly so. I will post again when she is complete.

I added some orange to the octopus And really like how it turned out!

When I added the dark blue it looked pretty good, but in this photo I can see more of the unevenness of the water color. I'm wondering if maybe I should have used acrylic instead.

I like how it is so far, I think when the rocket is painted it will be even better.

Finally doing something art again. drew this octopus on a blue water color wash. I have to play around a bit before i color it so i don't screw it up, but i'm thinking an orange spots on the octopus mayby? and a little space man with a lazer gun will go nicely as well.

The other day I learned how to make an 8 page zine out of one piece of paper. It's so cool! apparently my wife knew how to do this when she was like 7. Thanks addie for sharing this awesome cool project with me.

She made it up to me though by bringing me a book on making books called "How to Make Books" by Esther K. Smith. It is pretty neat, and makes me wish I were a much craftier person.

Anyway, I've been meaning to do a free doodle book thing ever since I saw these instant books and have finally gotten around to doing it. But stupid me used paper that was too big for my scanner to scan the whole thing and print a whole lot of little books.

Oh well, here is what I have this time.

This is the cover. Front is on the right side of the image, back is on the left. Yeah, it wraps around... I know, awesome cover design.

First and second page. Yes, second page is mostly blank. whatever.

3rd and 4th, and all of a sudden it's kind of sequential.

5th and 6th.

was gonna put something about me sucking at the harmonica on the last page... but then I remembered that my moon base totally kicks ass!

So the first page doesn't fit at all, but hey! it's a free doodle book! Why are your expectations set so high?!

I also never realized how dumb out mascot looks until I drew it in illustrator.

Robot witha rocket

Here's another Illustrator robot that I did. This was for a "do whatever you want" project and was the first time I used the gradient mesh too. I think i'm starting to like the mesh tool better, I figured out more things about the mesh tool after I finished this...

So there you go, a robot playing with a rocket. Super fun, nice and innocent. But then a friend suggested that i should make the background a wall of bodies; assuring me that a wall of bodies makes any illustration better, and it would be easy to do with the stamp sprayer.

Well the wall of bodies didn't work out, but one body looked okay in a dark humor kind of way. Also the robot's grin takes on a goofy "To Kill a Mockingbird" look.

Except instead of a mockingbird, the (can a robot be mentally ill?) robot killed this person and it would appear that he stole that toy rocket.

This is why I ask Brian if a fear of robots is really irrational?

robot nighthawk

Since I've been on this robot thing, I had this idea to paint robots in the style of different famous paintings. I think the original idea was to paint pictures that showed robots creating something, but that idea got morphed into this. I doubt I'll do many more of these, but I had time the other day and water-colored this image of Edward Hopper's "Night Hawks".

I think the waiter looks like a robot, but the other two are not obviously robots. For this I apologize and am slightly frustrated. Anyway, hooray for robots! and hooray for NightHawks!

More illustrations are on there way. Sorry it's been so long, but I have at least two more pictures ready so expect something great tomorrow!

Timmy and the Croc

Another Image done in illustrator. This was for the final, I had to illustrate a story of a kid name Timmy who's pajamas had magical patches that gave him super powers! One of his super hero feats was that he drug an alligator back to the zoo. I don't think this alligator looks like he's being dragged anywhere, It kind of looks separate from the boy running...

I'm really excited about some watercolor sketch books i have been making. They are turning out pretty great and I want to try to sell them on etsy! How much do you think you would pay for a nice homemade water color sketch book, that would make you look super cool, and or like an art snob?... but a cool art snob. It does take some time to make them and i'm buying pretty nice paper for them. I'm thinking $15 to $20 depending on the size. I think the etsy community would pay that. After i sell a few I'll prolly give a couple away on here as well.

Also, i'm working on making my own paper for them. That does take a long time, but if I can speed i'll sell 100% homemade, recycled/reused watercolor sketch books.

OK so, there was a point that Rocket and I would go poke our heads around this abandoned building "Sid Ritch" that has been numerous things in its tenure as a fixture in our town's sky line... I would scare/psyche myself up for the possibilities of what would be in such a building and Skyler was often a Douche about it and would sometimes take advantage of such situations....

new sketch book

I decided the other day to make my own sketch books. I am not sure why, but I had seen a few tutorials a while back and i just wanted to. So I grabbed an xacto and some old sketch books and began cutting all of the unused paper into something that I could use. The first book is kind of shabby, but the second one I put some srapbooking paper I has on the cover and spine and it looks pretty cool. This is made from water color paper that I got out of a Judi Bets sketch book, Don't tell me drawing teacher. She loves Judi. Anyway, here you go.

I can't wait to fill this up!

it makes me think of "lines" and that often times its said that i have good lines in my drawing, I still dont know what that means, but i just corect as i go and i make it look right so if there is advise in that take just doodle and doodle until you cant stop and focus on the whole picture not each line as you draw it will come together...

Here is some more art by Tiffany. She is one of the most talented artists at HPU. She paints very realistically and pays very close attention to detail. Apparently, she can paint all day...

She has also done some work in her Art for Elementary Students class. This class is fun, with all kinds of projects and crafts. All of the artists in this class are very good, even the ones who don't think so, and are not art majors. I only have Tiffany's projects because she is the only one I can match the art with a name. sorry for this, I will try to get more names and post more art later.

I am not sure of this project, except that it is of elephant ears colored with invented patterns and colors, using cray pas.

A clay sculpture of a "dreadful" dragon. Given the requirements for this project, i.e. nothing can be less than a quarter of an inch thick, and you must start with a bean like shape; achieving a "dreadful" looking dragon was more difficult than we all first guessed. That being said, I think that Tiffany's dragon was the most dreadful looking of them all.

There is a train that has been parked on the tracks across from my school for about 4 weeks now. This is very unusual as I have not seen a train parked there fore more than a day. It is obvious that other people have also noticed the train there, and although there are not many people who paint down town, There are at least a few that have taken this opportunity of the parked train. These are pretty good too!

And here are some of the sketches from an artist who, for now, chooses to be called Cell. He has some pretty good ideas, and seems to have good technique.

I like these that have silly creatures and more of a child like cartoons to them.

These are all just from his sketchbook, I'll try to get him to do some real pieces and I'll post them soon. Maybe He will even like to do some collaboration work with me.

I have a lot of sketches from a friend who is working on his graff designs. He's much more creative than I am and it all looks great, but I haven't had time to upload them all to my computer yet. It's been pretty busy, but look forward to it.

So I found this today walking down alleys down town...

I know it isn't great quality, and I took the pictures with my phone, but I have to post it because the face looks like someone's interpretation of the way my friend use to draw himself. We use to do some graffiti together, but he's moved away, and I did not do this stencil. I wish I knew who did though. Not many people around here paint illegally.

You all know that person who makes everyone else look super lame? That one person who is so much better than everybody, who has to do things perfect, who actually spends time and effort on the work and gets excellent results? Well, there is one of those people in the painting class at my school; her name is Tiffany.

The assignment was the same as the last post, cut the "canvas" into a shape... blah blah. Well Tiffany decided to cut out a silhouette of her boyfriend and then put this guitar over his shoulder.

So to start, she chose a complex shape to cut...

Next, this is painting class, so that guitar is a painting, and is on the same plane as the rest of the painting. Look again at Tiffany's picture, now look at this picture of a Fender Jazz Bass that I stole off the internet.

Do you remember those super lame people who are everyone else? Yeah, I have a feeling that you and I are those people.

(I said "you and I" so that I wouldn't feel alone.)

Birth of Venus

My sister, Molly is in a painting II class and for the first project the class had to cut their "canvas" into a shape that related to the painting in some way. They could either cut out the shape of an object and paint that object, or they could cut a shape that was related to the subject in the painting. Molly chose to paint the "Birth of Venus" by Botticelli and she painted inside the shape of a shell.

She did a great job! Although, I wanted her to be respectful to the history of this painting, and paint the first full nude female since the classical period, she decided she would only paint the bust. Oh well, maybe Bottecelli will forgive her.

The whole class did really well. I hope to post some more pictures, but am waiting to get permission from them.

Ants at "My Stupid Life"

I just stumbled across this webcomic, and I do think it is good. I have always wanted to do a webcomic but have failed to find the motivation to actually do it. Plus I secretly think that most of my art kind of sucks too much for the internet. Except for that Dwarf with a Hammer on my other page. He is Freaking Awesome!

Anyway, this comic has to do with ants, and I think I relate to Mitch a lot here. Plus it reminds me of a documentary that I watched on ants once. Some of them were killer ants, but they cleaned everything spottless, which is cool.

new job

So working fast/fried food is getting pretty lame. I have to work nights now because of classes. And this means one horrible thing. Highschool students. Let me explain. Not many highschool students are very cool. And most of them deserve to be fired, but are not. So i have to work with them. That is what I said, "horrible". And if you are a highschool student who is taking offense at this, just let me tell you, I was a highschool student once, and I wasn't very cool. But I still did my f**king job! Gah you all deserve to be fired! Quit talking! seriously!

Mid-post Moral: High school students are Not cool and deserve to be fired.

Howerver, during my free time in the mornings I have gotten a new and better job. This job is called Art Aid and just a few things in the job discription are:

1. Sculpt a severed head for the theatre department. This one is cool because I get paid to sculpt, and then the theatre department pays me again for the head. Also I don't have to buy the floral foam.

2. Re-work and wedge clay for the Art for Elementary Teachers class. This is cool because I can also re-work my own clay. Also half of the clay the teacher gives to me when it gets too hard. Soaking clay in water for a few days is a lot cheaper than $15 a bag.

3. Hang out with the painting 2 class. This is cool because I really don't do anything in this class but mess around with whatever in the art room.

and 4: re-arrange and clean out the store room. This one isn't cool, really, at all. Except I don't have to deal with food, customers, or co-workers, and most of all, no highschool students!

So I took off an extra night from Chicken E. and am working som in that art department. Yeh, it's pretty good.

Other things going on in my life...

I went out and painted wednesday night, I'll see if I can get a picture up.

my wife is getting more pregnant.

my Texas Government book came in, so I took a better look at what that class entails, and it sucks. Really bad. I'm sure I will complain about this later, but for now, i'm going to sleep.

knifty knitter

I got a Hobby lobby gift card for Christmas and I was hoping to get some under glaze for my ceramics. My school will let me use the kiln but they don't have enough underglaze to paint anything, so I will have to get my own.
But it turns out that Hobby Lobby doesn't have under glaze, or glaze for that matter. Not only do the not have these items, but they don't care for me at all. In fact they probably hate me.
Sculpy and other fun things were really expensive too!

So I was thinking about just getting a big garden gnome smoking a pipe but I decided I could just make my own; although, I still need under glaze if i want to paint it. Instead I found a nifty knitting loom. It calls itself the Knifty Knitter. Since, I have recent bought a toboggan that I really like, and also I have enjoy gnomes, and other such fey eerie creatures, and therefore, stocking caps, I decided to buy the looms and make my own ridiculously awesome hats. Then I spent about 20 minutes looking at yarn before I actually left the store.

Within aproximately 5 minutes of taking the yarn our of the bag I had tangle and ruined about a quarter of the skeen, even after spending almost all day trying to untangle it. So frustration is my first emotion connected with the knifty knitter.

Since then I have made one small baby hat, My wife has made another, and one suppose to be adult hat that was too small for my head, but it would have been terribly awesome! As a direct result of the latter hat being too small, my neighbor is now a cute garden gnome woman.

And now, It is really cold outside, I am without yarn and money, and still have no cool hat that kind of resembles Link's hat. My newest emotion connected with the knifty knitter is disappointment.

I am sighing and going to bed now. Maybe I'll talk my wife into letting me buy some cool yarn at wallmart tomorrow. Oh how I wish we had a hobbylobby in town. I still have 7ish dollars on my gift card.
